Description:The use of mounting gel as a sealant when storing radium (7440144) sources leaking radon (10043922) was studied. Plain, sugar, starch, or petroleum gels were placed in tubes emanating from a radon chamber for 30 days. After each 30 day exposure the gel was removed, weighed, and counted for bismuth-214 (14733030) a radon daughter product. The different gels had similar transmission characteristics for the various radon concentrations. Sugar and starch slightly increased the effectiveness of plain gel. Petroleum jelly provided the least transmission of radon per unit gel thickness. Gel thickness of 5 to 8 centimeters was required to achieve less than 1 percent release of radon. Physical stability of plain gel remained over long periods of time. The authors conclude that the sealant gel prevents environmental releases of radon. Its commercial availability facilitates immediate application. [Description provided by NIOSH]
