Description:The various forms of electromagnetic radiation are described. The mechanisms of action of ultraviolet and visible light, infrared energy, laser and microwave energy are discussed in relation to their effects on humans. Means of protection from each type of radiation are noted, and protection guides and standards are given. The philosophy of protection standards in Western countries and in the USSR are compared. Research in the USSR is controlled and directed to the solving of problems, and standards are based on concentrations of substances which cause minimum physiological changes. The problems of enforcement of the consequently stringent standards are noted. (Contract No. 210-76-0118) [Description provided by NIOSH]
