Description:Evidence for the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde (50000) is reviewed. The production and uses of formaldehyde are described along with exposure standards recommended by OSHA and NIOSH. The carcinogenicity and mutagenicity of formaldehyde are discussed, with emphasis on experiments in rats. Other health effects, such as eye burning and tearing, coughing, and heart palpitations are briefly considered. The authors conclude that formaldehyde should be handled in the workplace as a potential carcinogen. [Description provided by NIOSH]
