Description:Morphometric analyses of liver parenchymal cells are performed on ale albino rats fed a semipurified diet supplemented with two levels of copper (7440508) and zinc (7440666). The metals are administered in demineralized drinking water to four groups of animals at two levels. Cadmium (7440439) is also administered in the drinking water daily to one group of rats. Hepatocytes from rats fed the semipurified diet with low copper and zinc plus cadmium show a significant increase in smooth endoplasmic reticulum compared to animals fed the semipurified diet alone. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum increases when diets include chow and cadmium whereas rough endoplasmic reticulum decreases. [Description provided by NIOSH]
