Description:An introduction was presented to a session of the ASEE conference designed to address the objective of developing instructional materials as a basis for changing engineering curricula and stimulating the development of new or improved programs of instruction in the context of engineering education in the occupational safety and health field. While traditional engineers have been well prepared to design and construct industrial facilities and equipment, they have not been so commonly aware of the need to prevent safety and health problems as an integral element of the design process. The need for a partnership between the traditional engineer who is aware of safety and health concerns and the safety and health engineering specialist who will be instrumental in establishing design requirements from the standpoint of safety and health was mentioned.
