Integration of Safety and Health into Business and Engineering School Curricula.

  NIOSH programs for integrating occupational safety and health topics into the curricula of business and engineering schools were discussed. NIOSH has initiated two major programs, Project Minerva and Project SHAPE, to increase the emphasis on occupational safety and health in business and engineering schools' curricula. Project Minerva was reviewed. The project represented a cooperative effort among business schools, the private sector, and the government. The project was being implemented in four phases. The first phase involved making business schools aware of the need for students to receive information and instruction in occupational safety and health. The second phase was to encourage schools to incorporate occupational safety and health topics in their curricula. The third involved providing participating schools with safety and health educational materials. The fourth stage involved feedback about the usefulness of the materials, faculty involvement, and the number of students using the materials. Currently, more than 25 business schools are participating in Project Minerva. This has resulted in an increased awareness of the need for business students to receive instruction in the basic principles of occupational safety and health management. Project SHAPE was reviewed. SHAPE was directed toward engineering schools. It attempted to encourage engineering educators to emphasize occupational safety and health topics in engineering curricula. Activities occurring under SHAPE included curriculum improvement and development, promoting interaction through engineering societies, developing accreditation criteria for incorporating occupational safety and health topics in academic engineering programs, establishing a network for engineering faculty who have an interest in occupational safety and health, and sponsoring control systems research.
