Description:This testimony summarizes the views of NIOSH regarding the development of a more protective standard for exposure to methylene- chloride (75092). The permissible exposure limit was 500 parts per million (ppm) as a time weighted average (TWA). This was deemed to be too high and the suggestion was to lower that to a 25ppm TWA. Comments in this testimony concern pharmacokinetics, central nervous system health effects, epidemiology, medical surveillance, exposure monitoring, control technology, respiratory protection and other protective equipment. While the results of epidemiological studies have failed to demonstrate an excess risk of lung cancer, the findings are somewhat contradictory with respect to mortality from ischemic heart disease and liver cancer.
