Description:The results of NIOSH conducted industrial surveys at six companies involved in the research and development of recombinant DNA techniques applicable to fermentation processes were considered. Assessed criteria included: environmental monitoring; work practices (process protocols, clothing and hygiene requirements, and emergency and accident procedures); medical surveillance; worker education and training; engineering controls (physical containment design, exhaust gas filtration, and ventilation); and validation of the functionality of containment (aspects of complete sterilization, physical containment, and process termination). The companies with previous experience in industrial fermentation had process controls and programs for worker protection which were significantly more sophisticated and reliable than those developed by the less experienced companies. The authors conclude that companies with limited experience in biotechnology may not recognize the importance of safety and health programs. Recommendations for a safer work environment involved preventive maintenance, environmental monitoring, medical surveillance, and improved containment during fermenter inoculation.
