Pneumoconioses in the United States: highlights of surveillance data from NIOSH and other federal sources.

  A review was presented on information from NIOSH programs and other federal data sources which can be used to target preventive efforts for three pneumoconioses and to track progress toward their elimination. The pneumoconioses considered included coal workers' pneumoconiosis, silicosis, and asbestosis. The data sources considered included the NIOSH Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risks, the NIOSH Coal Workers' X-Ray Surveillance Program, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) multiple cause of death mortality data tapes, the National Hospital Discharge Survey conducted by NCHS, the Medicare Provider and Analysis Review files of the Health Care Financing Administration, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports of occupational injuries and illnesses. With regard to pneumoconiosis much of the information on occurrence was derived from studies which did not specifically target these diseases. The authors state that once data are collected, it is only through effective communication of the data and subsequent analyses which will allow the development of procedures to prevent or at least lessen the incidence of these diseases.
