Mortality patterns among miners and millers occupationally exposed to asbestiform talc.

  Mortality patterns among miners and millers exposed to talc (14807966) containing asbestiform amphiboles were studied. Mortality rates of 398 mine and mill workers employed between 1947 and 1960 were determined. Fifty percent of the workers had less than 1 year of service and about 25 percent had 10 or more years of service. Smoking habits were largely unknown. Deaths among the cohort population were compared to those for the United States White male population. The overall observed mortality was higher than expected, although the difference was not statistically significant. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was significantly elevated for all malignant neoplasms combined and for all nonmalignant respiratory diseases combined. An increasing risk of bronchogenic cancer with increasing latency was also noted. Four of 10 deaths due to bronchogenic cancer occurred in individuals with less than 1 year of service. The only mesothelioma death occurred in a worker with 16 years of service. The authors conclude that an excessive risk of lung cancer and nonmalignant respiratory disease exists for workers occupationally exposed to asbestiform talc. [Description provided by NIOSH]
