Description:A workshop was held to develop indicators for the quality of data documentation. The purpose of the indicators was to provide the user of health and environmental databases with a means of distinguishing well documented data. Participants in the workshop were asked to develop sets of criteria that could be used to judge the completeness of documentation in reports and to suggest indicators based on these criteria. The tasks of the workshop were divided among professionals from five health and environmental disciplines: health effects, mammalian tests; health effects, in- vitro tests; ecological effects; occupational measurements; and environmental measurements. The participants verified the need for indicators that give users of computer information resources an index of the completeness of original reports from which data or information were extracted. Each of the five workgroups arrived at sets of criteria that might be adapted to scientific and technical reports in their respective disciplines. While there was not sufficient time to set priorities for the use of individual indicators or to recommend indexing schemes to be applied in databases, future efforts should be directed to accomplishing this. Several recommendations were offered to aid in the transmittal of information between interested parties. [Description provided by NIOSH]
