Description:The scope and objectives of the NIOSH phase of the NIOSH/EPA control technology assessment plan for the pesticide industry (SIC-2879) are reviewed. The aim of the program is to identify and develop solutions to control health hazards. The four basic elements of hazard control technology are described. These include the design and installation of good engineering controls, implementation of good work practices among the work force, provision of effective personal equipment, and the use of environmental and medical monitoring programs. Different phases of the control technology program are discussed. One phase involves assessing hazard control technology in at least 20 specific industries. Major objectives of the NIOSH assessment are examined. The objectives include documenting effective engineering controls, producing a set of guidelines for the pesticide industry, good work practices, and documenting inadequate engineering controls. How these objectives can be accomplished is considered. In the first phase of the assessment, specific pesticides are selected for study. Then certain factories are selected and surveyed. Finally, guidelines are prepared. The author concludes that the guidelines will be helpful in selecting effective engineering approaches, work practices, protective equipment, and monitoring programs. [Description provided by NIOSH]
