Community health services as a complementary factor in the process of rural development with social justice.

  The socioeconomic and cultural factors involved in organizing a health care system in developing countries were explored, using rural India as an example. The lack of funds for health care was discussed, including the fact that 13 percent of India's budget was used for defense and 7 percent for health care. It was suggested that better health for the population would result in a stronger labor force, and better nutrition would result in children who would be mentally alert and more easily educable. Effective management and organization of a health care system was seen to be essential. Better education so that people could take more active political roles in determining their countries' policies was proposed. Religious organizations' programs could also fit into the total health care scenario. Increasing population growth was seen to be a major problem; birth control, modifying the society's expectations for large families, and reduction of infant mortality were possible solutions. Education was necessary to cross caste lines when doctor and patient were of different social levels and when fellow patients were of different social levels. It was necessary to place health care centers in convenient locations. The author concludes that health care systems do not produce the desired result without socioeconomic development in rural areas. [Description provided by NIOSH]
