Questionnaire survey of VDT operators at the New York state departments of motor vehicles and taxation and finance.

  In response to a request from the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Safety and Health Maintenance Committee, a study was made of video display terminal (VDT) operators at the Departments of Motor Vehicles and Taxation and Finance in Albany, New York. The goal was to identify factors contributing to musculoskeletal and general health problems reported by the operators and to devise recommendations for eliminating or limiting these factors. The questionnaire was administered to 905 VDT operators, over 90 percent of the operators in each of the departments. The male operators were primarily programmers and computer operators while the female members of the sample were usually data entry operators and clerks. The male operators spent fewer hours per day using the VDT than did the female operators, with 46 percent of the men using the VDT at least 5 hours a day compared with 83 percent of the women. In general the percentages of female operators experiencing different classes of musculoskeletal and visual symptoms in this study were fairly comparable to other studies of this kind. A higher percentage of women than men were experiencing these symptoms, possibly due to the different types of tasks each was doing and the length of time on the VDT units. Several workstation design features arose which needed changing including chair discomfort, undue screen glare, limited screen and keyboard positioning, and glare from overhead lighting fixtures.
