Description:A manual was presented which was designed to aid students in identifying hazards in the chemistry laboratory, to teach students at least five do's and don'ts that apply to all laboratory situations, and to describe safe practices for handling and cleaning glassware, heating liquids with gas and electrical apparatus, and moving and storing reagents. Major hazards encountered in the analytical chemical laboratory include health hazards arising from exposure to toxic materials used routinely in such occupations; flammable materials such as extraction solvents and explosive reagents; contact with radioactive substances used as sources for detectors; and exposure to compressed gases used in conjunction with chromatographic equipment, spectrophotometry, and other analytical methods as well as cryogenic gases used in highly specialized analytical applications. In the first lesson, general concepts of laboratory safety were considered, and students were encouraged to think about the implications of laboratory actions before they do them, to become familiar with the different types of equipment found in the laboratory, and to learn proper laboratory techniques. General concepts also included an understanding of proper and safe labeling practices. It is stated that electrical hazards often result from the use of equipment not in optimal condition or the use of improperly grounded equipment and outlets. [Description provided by NIOSH]
