Description:A modification of the method for the sampling and analysis of aniline (62533) vapor in air at high humidities was described. Aniline, N,N-dimethylanaline (121697), o-toluidine (95534), and xylidine (1300738) were collected from air onto silica gels at concentrations of 5 parts per million (ppm) each. The compounds o- anisidine (90040) and p-anisidine (104949) were collected at levels of 0.1ppm and p-nitroaniline (100016) was collected at a level of 1ppm. The level of air sampling for o-chloroaniline (95512) not established. The standard silica gel tubes used in the collection of aniline were inadequate for collection at high humidities. Approximately 80 percent of the aniline sample was retained on the tube at a relative humidity of 50 percent, and at a relative humidity of 100 percent only 2mg aniline was collected after 8 hours of flow. Modification of the sampling tube involved increasing the amount of silica gel and increasing the tube diameter. The modified tube showed an acceptable pressure drop when porous plugs were used. Eight samples of aniline with concentrations up to 140mg/m3 were analyzed at a relative humidity of 100 percent. No aniline was detected in the backup tube for any of the samples. Gas chromatography was successfully used for the analysis of the ethanol eluent of the modified tube containing the other aromatic amines. The modified tube was also used with an alumina sorbent to analyze air concentrations of formaldehyde without interference by methanol. [Description provided by NIOSH]
