Case-control study of cancer of the pancreas in Massachusetts Health Service Area VI.

  In response to a reported increase in the occurrence of cancer of the pancreas in Massachusetts Health Service Area-VI, a case control study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of this disease and its possible relationship to employment at General Electric Corporation. Using death certificates for male residents of Health Service Area-VI for 1979 through 1983, 185 cases of cancer of the pancreas were identified; 737 comparison subjects were chosen, stratified for race and age. Based on information on death certificates, 40 of the decedents were considered to have been employed at General Electric; of these, five had cancer of the pancreas listed on their death certificates. The odds ratio for cancer of the pancreas was 0.6 for General Electric subjects. Statistically significant elevations among the whole cohort for cancer of the pancreas were determined for the following seven specific industry categories: printing, publishing and allied industries; chemicals and allied products manufacturing; electrical machines, equipment and supplies manufacturing; bus service and urban transit; retail grocery stores; retail eating and drinking places; and educational services. The odds ratio was significantly elevated for bus drivers. According to the authors, no strong clues emerged from this study and the high incidence of cancer of the pancreas among males in Health Service Area-VI remains unexplained.
