  An occupational safety and health profile of printing industry (SIC- 2751) processes is presented. The available scientific and technical information on printing processes is summarized for the purpose of establishing guidelines for preventing or minimizing the severity of health and safety hazards. Process trends in the printing industry are described. Sources of exposure to occupational hazards are discussed. These include accidents and exposure to chemical and physical agents. Most accidents and injuries involve improper handling of equipment and materials. Solvents and inks are the primary chemicals to which workers in pressroom operations are exposed. An estimated 2800 chemicals are used in ink formulation, and a large number of solvents are used for type, blanket, and roller washers, as plate and screen cleaners, and as thinners. The biologic effects of exposure to chemical and physical agents encountered in printing processes are discussed. The control of exposures is considered. Management involvement in hazard control programs is examined. The role of medical surveillance, safety and health training, and the identification and evaluation of hazards are considered. Engineering controls and work practices are described. Current OSHA standards relevant to printing processes are summarized. [Description provided by NIOSH]
