Description:NIOSH health and safety guidelines for the printing industry were presented. Suggestions for reducing unsafe acts and practices in print shops were given. Specific guidelines for machine guarding, environmental control, preventing fire hazards, installing and maintaining automatic sprinkler systems, and materials handling were discussed. Frequently violated regulations were considered. These included regulations pertaining to walking and working surfaces, exits and exit markings, occupational health and environmental control, hazardous materials, personal protection equipment, general environmental control, medical and first aid, fire protection, compressed air equipment, materials handling and storage, machinery and machine guarding, hand and portable power tools, welding, cutting, and brazing, and the National Electrical Code. Recordkeeping requirements were discussed. Checklists for use when making periodic inspections of printing facilities were provided. A chart for selecting appropriate types of fire extinguishers was given. Sources for obtaining additional information on topics such as floor and wall openings, mechanical power transmission, and installing portable fire extinguishers were listed. A chart demonstrating how to lift objects safely was provided. [Description provided by NIOSH]
