  The rationale for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigating the health and safety consequences of shift work was discussed. Identification of any direct effects of shift work and changing shift schedules on the health and safety of the worker, as well as secondary factors which may alter the worker's ability to handle stress, was considered an important part of the NIOSH mission to ensure a healthful work environment. Concern about the possible adverse effects of shift work was found as early as 1860, when efforts were made to regulate the working hours of bakers. The introduction of manufacturing processes which required continuous operations and the advance of good lighting systems made shift work a common occurrence. The effects of shift work on the worker's capabilities, longevity, mortality and morbidity were identified as areas which need to be researched. Determining the number of workers that work at night or on alternating shifts was also considered important in establishing the magnitude of any related problems. The author concludes that data are needed on the effects of shift work in order to establish guidelines which would minimize the adverse consequences on workers. [Description provided by NIOSH]
