  Information of existing health and safety programs was acquired from current industrial users of nickel (7440020) and inorganic nickel compounds. Nine plants were visited and observations are reported on medical programs, posting and labeling, personal protective equipment, informing the employees of hazards, work practices, sanitation, and environmental monitoring. In the U.S., the nickel industry considers that cancer associated with nickel is related to the refining process in other countries, and therefore, nickel does not present a risk to workers in this country dealing with the same material, but with a different process. The work practices, medical programs, and monitoring schedules reflect this underlying attitude. Few areas of high exposure to nickel were observed.
