Description:Portable, cyclone-type personal samplers, used to sample respirable dust in coal mines, report significantly lower respirable concentrations than do similar cyclone-filter configurations when operated at steady flow rates. The decrease in respirable concentration is caused by increased cyclone retention which has been related to the degree of velocity fluctuation at the cyclone inlet port. Pulsation dampeners, when added, improve respirable collection efficiency, resulting in performance close to that of uniform flow. [Description provided by NIOSH]
