Description:Results of a field survey on respirator use and acceptability, and data from an in mine (bituminous coal) testing program for determining the effectiveness of presently available approved respirators, are reported for a two phase, NIOSH sponsored research project. A record of the time that respirators are worn by employees is obtained with a breath temperature sensing device; and an effective protection factor (EPF) for respirators is determined under use conditions by relating cyclone sampled dust concentrations in the ambient air to dust concentrations of filtered air inside the respiratory facepiece. Effective protection factor distribution data are given for four mines studied, and differences in average EPF are reported for the job classifications of mining machine operator, loading machine operator, shuttle car operator, and roof bolter.
