Description:An indepth survey of air contaminant controls was conducted at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company (SIC-3011), in Gadsden, Alabama on December 10 to 13, 1979. The survey was part of a NIOSH study to examine and document effective controls for air contaminants in the tire manufacturing industry. Controls evaluated included local exhaust ventilation for a compounding station, local exhaust ventilation systems for under treaded and end tread cementing, and a general dilution makeup air system for a row of tire curing presses. Air samples for total and respirable particulates were collected, ventilation system measurements were made, and process and work practices were observed. Air samples were analyzed for acetone (67641), petroleum distillate, toluene (108883), and m-xylene (108383). OSHA permissible exposure limits (PEL) for nuisance dusts were 15 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3), and for respirable nuisance dusts, 5mg/m3. The OSHA PEL for petroleum distillate was 2000mg/m3, and for benzene, toluene, and acetone, 30, 650, and 2400mg/m3, respectively. All particulate and vapor concentrations obtained in the study were below the OSHA PEL for an 8 hour time weighted average. The authors conclude that the controls in this facility are among the better controls for air contaminants in the industry. [Description provided by NIOSH]
