The status of standardization work on respiratory protective equipment by the German Standards Institute and the European Committee for Standardization.

  The efforts of the German Standards Institute and the European Committee for Standardization toward standardization of respiratory protective equipment are discussed. New standards developed by the German Standards Institute with respect to full face masks, half masks, mouthpiece assemblies, gas only and gas/particle filters, particle filters, disposable respirators, and compressed air breathing apparatus are reviewed. Physiological and psychological factors associated with the use of respiratory equipment are identified. Benefits of the standardization work on respirator protective equipment being conducted by the European Committee for Standardization are described. The author concludes that, although much progress has been made, considerable effort is still required to harmonize standards established throughout the European Community and to encourage countries to accept standards and test certificates approved in other countries.
