Respirator research needs.

  Research needs in the area of respiratory protection are examined. The inadequacies of current respirator certification regulations are discussed. Research needs related to filter and sorption agents used in air purifying respirators are described. The need for further development and funding of research investigating the physiological and psychological effects of wearing a respirator is discussed. Shortcomings of current quantitative fit tests are discussed and research focuses which could address these problems are identified. The author concludes that new and untried ideas must be explored in order to overcome the respirator's reputation as an uncertain means of protection and that the current manufacture, certification, and use program provides little incentive for change.
