Description:Major concerns of the respirator user population are discussed. The role of identification and recognition hazards in increased resistance of workers to respirator use is examined. The effect of regulations and guidelines developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration on actual respirator programs in affected industries is described. The reaction of the ultimate users to particular types of respirators is described. The role of labor/management relations in respirator programs is examined. The author concludes that persons charged with the design and regulation of respiratory protective systems must respond to the problems and questions these devices provoke in the work environment if respirator usages is to provide a tolerable option for the control of occupational hazards.
