Description:The properties of ionizing radiation are reviewed. Ionizing radiation is defined and types of ionizing radiation, including X- rays, alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, and neutrons, are described. The occurrence and uses of ionizing radiation are discussed, and the number of persons occupationally exposed are estimated. The occurrence of ionizing radiation and the biologic effects of exposure are reviewed. Human and animal studies are cited. Safety recommendations by the National Bureau of Standards, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the International Committee on Radiological Protection, and the National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurements are included.
