Description:Major sources of noise on the fly shuttle loom machines used in the textile industry were investigated. Noise levels were measured during the stages of loom assembly; and in order to identify specific sources, a high speed motion picture camera was synchronized with a microphone recorder timing signal system to correlate specific events in the loom cycle with peak impacts occurring in the sound pressure waveforms. Uncontrolled motion of the lug strap, separation of pick ball from pick cam after picking, and noises related to stopping highly energized parts after performance of function were identified as the major noise sources. The authors conclude that the positive noise source identification technique can be used to identify dominant noise sources for treatment by engineering control techniques.
