  The role played by a patient's profession, occupation, and recreation habits in the diagnosis of atypical infections of the extremities is discussed. Veterinarians, animal handlers, pet owners, trainers, and research workers are infected through animal bites. Research workers, medical and dental technicians contact or transmit diseases through accidents or poor laboratory techniques, Herpes simplex virus diagnosis in such instances are treated more rapidly when this is kept in mind. The environment of specific geographical areas can be a guideline in diagnoses. Marine biologists and students and fishermen become infected with Microbacterium marinum. The trapper can have a case of tularemia; a hide or wool worker can have anthrax; a jungle missionary or Peace Corps worker can have Cutaneous leishmaniasis; sporotrichosis can be contacted by rose gardeners and foresters. For an expedient diagnosis of infectious diseases of the extremities, the author recommends that physicians evaluate the health habits, recreation and profession of patients.
