Description:The results of analysis of 54 filter cassettes and two bulk solids for total particulate polycylic organic matter and benzo(a)pyrene (50328) are presented. Total particulate polycyclic organic matter (TPPOM) was determined by a modification of the Naonui and Hall method for the determination of aromatic content of mineral oil which sought to reduce the uncertainty of results obtained by previous methods. It is maintained that the exact values of TPPOM can only be found by using a reference solution containing all of the compounds found in the sample, with identical concentration ratios of the individual components as in the sample. In the absence of such a reference, a range may be determined for TPPOM by first calculating what the concentration would be for the smallest absorptivity, and then similarly calculating the concentration if the sample contained only that compound with the largest absorptivity. Only a few of the filter samples were found to contain significant amounts of PPOM, and no benzo(a)pyrene was found. In 12 of the samples, the glass fiber silver filters and then backup pad were analyzed separately. Ten showed equal or greater amounts of PPOM on the backup pad than the glass Ag filters. It is concluded that negative results for benzo(a)pyrene of PPOM may give an inaccurate measure of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon exposure; strong consideration should be given to an evaluation of sampling efficiency of filters.
