Description:A walk through survey to assess control technology at a hazardous waste disposal operation was conducted at Rollins Environmental Services, Incorporated (SIC-4953), Bridgeport, New Jersey, in August 1981. Bulk liquids and drums containing liquid wastes were scheduled for an arrival date that would minimize storage time and ensure compatibility of the waste mixture in storage tanks. Liquids were pumped by vacuum into appropriate 20,000 gallon storage tanks that were nitrogen blanketed. Packaging of drums was done outdoors. The storage tank farm was surrounded by a foam induction system that was activated in the event of fire. Workers handling the hoses wore personal protective equipment that was waste specific. Minimum personal protective equipment included hard hats and safety glasses. Direct worker contact with wastes at the incinerator was minimized, the only contact being manual loading of drums onto the conveyor feed. Other activities were directed from the control room. The door to the kiln was hydraulically operated. Windows in the control room were made of safety glass. Workers were monitored for exposure to benzene (71432), toluene (108883), acrylonitrile (107131), and ortho-dichlorobenzene (95501). The authors conclude that an in depth survey of the facility is desirable, but not economically feasible. [Description provided by NIOSH]
