  A walk through survey of hazardous waste disposal operations at SCA Chemical Services (SIC-4953), Newark, New Jersey, was conducted in August 1981. The facility accepted virtually every waste listed in the EPA hazardous waste classification system, and had a design capacity of 500,000 gallons per day with storage space for 900 drums. Engineering controls consisted of surrounding bulk liquid chemical wastes with nitrogen, isolating and enclosing all chemical operations and processes, and continuous monitoring of wastewater and sludge treatment processes. The facility provided protective clothing and equipment to all employees including dust masks, respirators, and supplied air respirators. The company provided formal and on the job training for all employees and sponsored monthly safety meetings. Management conducted environmental and medical monitoring. All workers were given annual physical examinations and blood tests were given twice a year. The authors note that no occupational exposure problems have ever been experienced at the facility.
