Description:A preliminary survey was conducted to assess control technology at Rohm and Haas Delaware Valley, Incorporated (SIC-2821), Bristol, Pennsylvania in May 1981. The ability of engineering controls, housekeeping, and work practices to control exposures to polyvinyl- chloride (9002862), acrylic resins, and barium-cadmium-stearate (1191793) dusts during the opening, emptying, and disposal of bags, containers, and powdered chemicals was investigated. Air concentrations of the dusts were not measured, as they were monitored by the company. Engineering controls included pneumatic conveyance of mixed chemicals, bulk loading from a storage hopper, local exhaust ventilation, and the use of a central air vacuum system for dust spills. The factory layout was designed to permit wash down of contaminated surfaces and floors. Company data indicated the concentrations of all particulates were below relevant federal standards. Personnel were required to wear personal respiratory protection equipment in the mix and pigment rooms. Workers were provided with safety shoes and clean clothes daily. A medical monitoring program was in effect. The author concludes that the engineering controls, housekeeping procedures, and work practices are effective in controlling dust concentrations. An in depth survey is recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
