We would like to thank Drs. Cartwright and Morgan for highlighting many of the challenges inherent in conducting observational research, as well as some of the special challenges in interpreting results that arise from topics that are politically and socially charged. In our publication, we took care to be sensitive to this fact; however, we appreciate the opportunity to resolve any residual ambiguity regarding our findings and how we suggest that others interpret our findings. In our study, we reported that officers who discharged their firearms had approximately 2-3 times greater odds of being a military veteran than officers who did not discharge their firearms. We recognize that there are many potentially inappropriate or inaccurate conclusions that some readers may be tempted to draw from these results. Below, we highlight some of these inappropriate conclusions-many of which were also mentioned by Cartwright and Morgan. ... We thank Cartwright and Morgan for highlighting aspects of our article as potentially misleading or ambiguous. We share their concern that our study would be used to justify inappropriate conclusions or discriminate against any group of people. However, we also believe that these emotionally charged topics that have the greatest need for facts derived from empirical research. As a result, it would be irresponsible not to publish our results, which have the potential to move the conversation about this important topic forward. It is incumbent upon us as researchers, editors, journalists, and the public to use this information responsibly. We hope that we, along with Cartwright and Morgan, have provided others with some useful guidance for the responsible interpretation of our study findings and heed our call for future research and begin to fill the gaps identified in our study.
