Description:It all began with the funding announcement... 1) Dungeness crab fleet highest risk in the Pacific Northwest 2) Industry/worker participation 3) Gatekeepers for commercial fishermen: Oregon Sea Grant 4)W hat fishermen will tolerate/perceive benefit with: Marine Science Researchers; 5) Community researcher approach. Who are they? 15 community researchers (CRs). Interacted with the commercial fishing industry in various capacities: Wives/girlfriends/friends; Fish observer; Journalist; Marine Insurer; Fish/Wildlife researcher. Participation: In person meetings & monthly phone calls; Many emails and one-on-one phone calls; Mailings and convenience meetings along coast. Basic "job" description: complete training on human subjects' protocols, develop outreach/engagement strategies specific to research activities, collect primary data from fishermen, provide input on the project. Lessons learned: 1) Herding cats. 2) Amazing source of great ideas/reaction/feedback. 3) Amazing data collection/dedication to fishermen. 4) Community leadership development. 5) Ongoing collaboration.
