Description:NIOSH has requested assistance in the prevention of falls and electrocutions during tree trimming or cutting. Eight incidents were described in which five electrocutions and three fatal falls involving tree trimmers occurred. The Alert discussed current regulations which are appropriate to those persons involved in trimming of trees. Recommendations stressed the following: complying with current OSHA regulations; developing and implementing comprehensive safety programs which identify electric hazards and deal with climbing, felling, topping and pruning trees, as well as the use of mobile equipment, hand and portable power tools, and fall protection equipment; providing workers with training in electrical safety, correct use of fall protection equipment, safe work procedures, inspection of trees and tree limbs, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation; ensuring that aerial bucket truck operators are trained in the safe operation of their vehicles; informing workers of the hazards; conducting job site surveys to identify hazards; notifying the electric company when an aerial bucket truck or other boomed vehicle is to be used; ensuring that workers adhere to established safe work procedures; prohibiting the use of conductive tools; and providing appropriate fall protection equipment.
