  The purpose of this workshop was to summarize the current state of knowledge about environmental and occupational asthma, to develop strategies to transmit essential knowledge to primary care providers, and to identify research priorities. Specific topics addressed at the workshop included priorities for the management of environmental and occupational asthma, the role of the physician in environmental and occupational asthma, epidemiology and surveillance, studies from Barcelona, asthma and persistent wheeze in the Harvard Six Cities study, clinical surveillance and management of occupational asthma, tertiary prevention by the primary practitioner, clinical assessment of bronchial hyperresponsiveness due to nonspecific and specific agents, use of immunologic technology in the diagnosis of environmental and occupational immunologic lung disease, exposure assessment, evaluation of a proposed NIOSH surveillance, clinical management when the environment can be changed, legal and ethical aspects of patient management, assessing impairment from asthma, assessing disability from occupational asthma, and compensation for occupational asthma in Quebec.
