Utilization of air cleaning equipment in exhaust air recirculation systems

• Description:
  Design criteria and applications of air cleaning equipment in industrial exhaust air recirculation systems were reviewed. Topics that were addressed included the concept of industrial exhaust air recirculation; air cleaning equipment such as gas and vapor collection; particulate collection including electrostatic precipitators (ESP), fabric filters, and wet collectors; cost data; design approach; and research and development needs. A general approach to the design of air cleaning equipment was presented with an in depth evaluation as part of the design process which included characterization of airstream and contaminants, collection requirements, equipment capabilities, residue disposal, costs, and operation/maintenance requirements. Research needs were discussed in relation to air cleaning equipment performance, ESP, fabric filtration, and wet scrubbing. The author concludes that valid design criteria and performance data are needed to provide a sound basis for the design of recirculation systems. A comprehensive engineering design approach must be rigorously applied to air cleaning equipment in recirculation systems in order to insure optimum performance and worker protection.
