Description:A technical critique of the 1977 subject report "Guidelines for the Recirculation of Industrial Exhaust Air" by Arthur D. Little (re: NIOSH Contract No. 210-76-0129) was presented. Points of the report that were considered praiseworthy included presentation of a logical framework for judging the effects of exhaust air recirculation on worker safety, emphasis on worker health and safety, and presentation of a unique mathematical model of particular merit with respect to existing local exhaust systems. Limitations of the report were: undeveloped guidelines as far as design, equipment selection, and economic feasibility; presentation of a somewhat less than desirable mathematical model with respect to new exhaust systems; and the inclusion of extremely complex appendices. Committee member comments on the report and critique were included. The author concludes that the report is very useful to occupational health personnel in assessing exhaust air recirculation plans, but does not provide sufficiently detailed guidance to be helpful to engineers concerned with practical design or economic feasibility.
