The NIOSH B Reader Certification Program. An update report

• Description:
  The NIOSH-B reader program trained and certified physicians in the use of the International Labor Office (ILO) system for classifying radiographs for the presence of pneumoconioses. The current certification and recertification examinations for qualification under the NIOSH B-reader program were described. The history, format, and the rationale of the B-reader program were discussed. Scores were provided for the years 1987 to 1990, as well as pass/fail rates and grade distributions. There was evidence that substantial variability existed among certified B-readers. Although some variability was expected, critics have indicated that the interreader variation in the B-reader program is excessive. A workshop was held in Chicago in 1990 in order to uncover reasons for this variability and to recommend improvements in training and quality control. [Description provided by NIOSH]
