Description:The inter-observer variation that occurs in the differentiation of the various types of small opacities present in the chest roentgenograms of working miners is found to be appreciable, which leads to the conclusion that rigid training of readers is essential and that any one reading should not be taken as final. The progression of coal workers pneumoconiosis should be quantified by assessing simultaneously the combined increase of both regular and irregular opacities. [Description provided by NIOSH]
