Description:As part of a longitudinal study of respiratory health, underground bituminous coal miners from mines in the northern Appalachian region were asked about respirator use every 6 months between May 1985 and July 1987. Respirator use was analyzed for 193 miners. They classified their respirator use for the previous 6 months as 0%, 0 to 25%, 25 to 50%, 50 to 75% or 75 to 100% of the time on the job. Any changes in job assignment were noted. A respirator was worn a reported 18.9% of the time; 36.8% of the subjects reported no use of a respirator. The mean reported use by face workers was 28.1% of the time, while use by transportation workers was 23.2% of the time. Wearing a respirator more than 25% of the time was reported by 50% of face workers and 8.6% of nonface workers. Wearing a respirator more than 50% of the time was reported by 25.5% of face workers and 3.5% of nonface workers. Of workers who moved from face to nonface jobs, a respirator was used 28.7% of the time while working at the face and 8.7% of the time when engaged in nonface work. For face workers, transportation workers, and supervisors, longer tenure in the job was associated with lower respirator use. [Description provided by NIOSH]
