Description:Levels of diesel exhaust aerosol (DEA) in underground mines were determined using a newly developed personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler employing size selective inertial impaction and gravimetric analysis. Five mines producing high volatile, bituminous coal were analyzed. DEA levels were relatively consistent between haulageway, shuttle car, and return locations; however, levels of respirable aerosol differed with location. The mean DEA concentration for the five mines was 0.89mg/m3 at the haulageway. Fifty two percent of the respirable aerosol at this location was due to DEA. Concentrations of carbon-monoxide (630080), carbon-dioxide (124389), nitrogen-oxide (10024972), nitrogen-dioxide (10102440), and sulfur- dioxide (7446095) were well below recommended levels in the two mines in which they were studied. Mean haulageway soluble organic fraction (SOF) levels ranged from 0.08 to 0.19mg/m3. Haulageway biological activity values for SOF and DEA were similar between the two mines in which they were studied and were at least five to ten times higher than those of mean ambient air samples. Biological activity levels associated with intake air were more variable than those measured in the haulageway. The authors conclude that DEA makes an important contribution to respirable coal mine dust aerosol concentrations. [Description provided by NIOSH]
