Description:The exposure level of underground miners to diesel engine exhaust was examined by comparing levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM), biological activity, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations generated by diesel engines in mines and those collected in engine laboratory facilities. Mean DPM levels ranged from 0.90 to 1.9mg/m3 and mean soluble organic fraction (SOF) levels ranged from 0.08 to 0.40mg/m3 in samples collected from three underground mines. Large variations in the concentrations of fluoranthene (206440), pyrene (129000), and benzo(a)pyrene (50328) were seen between two mines, primarily due to differences in levels of DPM and SOF. None of the SOF extracts had mutagenic activity. Comparison of in mine data to laboratory results adjusted to obtain expected or predicted values did not demonstrate significant differences between the data sets. Virtually all in mine data fell within the predicted range using a potential in mine dilution ratio of 20 to 200/1. The authors conclude that laboratory data provide accurate estimations of in mine concentrations allowing for extrapolation of laboratory results of the health related benefits of particulate emission control devices.
