Description:The use of optical remote sensing (ORS) of air pollutants in industrial hygiene applications was discussed. Optical regions used for ORS, typical compounds measured in each region, and applications in each region were summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of ORS were considered. Advantages consisted of being able to perform monitoring of inaccessible or isolated areas, speed, the ability to perform multicompound analyses, and the ability to make path integrated measurements that can detect plumes or spatially or temporally varying emissions, emissions that could not be measured by point source monitoring. Disadvantages included collecting background spectra instead of a clean background, instrument cost, the need for the operators of some systems to have a technical background and specialized training, and decreases in spatial resolution caused by path averaging. The general principles of spectral analysis were discussed. Techniques used for laser ORS, long path ultraviolet remote sensing, infrared ORS, and multiple beam ORS were reviewed, including discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of each specific technique. The review of laser ORS also included a discussion of the light detection and ranging technique. The review of infrared ORS also considered gas filter correlations, long path gas cells, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy applied to explosive atmospheres. The application of computed tomography to air monitoring in industrial hygiene applications was discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
