Description:The mutagenic potentials of selected industrial chemicals and related compounds were evaluated. A total of 147 industrial chemicals and structurally related compounds were tested in the Ames/Salmonella assay using Salmonella-typhimurium strains (TA-98), (TA-100), (TA-1535), and (TA-1537) with or without metabolic activation by liver S9 mix from aroclor-1254 pretreated male Sprague- Dawley-rats. Five different concentrations of each chemical were used. The highest concentration was determined by the solubility and toxicity of the compound. A total of 120 compounds were not mutagenic, 23 were mutagenic to one or more of the strains, and four required metabolic activation. The authors conclude that a number of industrial chemicals have been found to be mutagenic in the Ames/Salmonella assay. These should be tested further in mammalian and submammalian systems.
