Description:Work performance decrements associated with respirator wear were assessed. The evaluation focused on physical, cognitive, and psychomotor performance in 12 healthy young men who wore three different mask types during various tasks. The respirators studied included a disposable dust mask, an air purifying half mask, and a full face airline mask. Comparisons were based on performance without respirators. Increased exertion was noted in the physical work tasks and reduced steadiness and slower arm/hand movements were seen for the psychomotor tasks. No effect on performance was noted for the cognitive tasks. Steadiness was reduced 31% for the full face respirator condition. The one hole test revealed an average movement time decrement of 16%. Bicycle riding was associated with a 10% increase in oxygen consumption with the half and full face masks. The authors emphasize careful selection of tasks for evaluating performance and state that specific, not general tasks and abilities should be modeled. [Description provided by NIOSH]
