Description:The production, use, and health effects of manganese (7439965) and its compounds were reviewed. Manganese has wide industrial applications in the production of steel and various alloys. Additional industrial uses include ceramics, fertilizers, animal and poultry feed, batteries, welding rods and fluxes, agricultural chemicals, and as a gasoline additive. The primary route of exposure of manganese in cases of occupational exposures has been primarily inhalational. The brain and the lungs have been found to be targets of manganese toxicity. The pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of manganese toxicity were reviewed. The toxic effects of the organomanganese compounds methylcyclopentadienyl- manganese-tricarbonyl (12108133) and manganese-ethylene-bis- dithiocarbamate (12427382) were described in detail due to the high potential for occupational exposures to these compounds. Recommended exposure limits for manganese, inorganic manganese compounds, and manganese fumes were presented. [Description provided by NIOSH]
