Description:The biological effects of occupational exposure to manganese (7439965) and associated compounds were reviewed and discussed. The chemical properties and industrial uses of manganese were described. The route of entry of manganese in cases of occupational exposure has primarily been via inhalation, although skin absorption has occurred with tricarbonyls of manganese. Exposure to manganese has resulted in chronic nervous system disorder or a form of lobar pneumonia. The symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of these disorders were described. Suggestions for limiting manganese exposures included controls to keep exposure levels below recommended values (process enclosures, adequate ventilation, wetting of dust, and remote handling), the use of personal protective equipment, proper employee education, and medical surveillance. Problems associated with the use of and accidental exposure to organic manganese compounds were discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
